REVIEW: If the Haunting Fits, Wear it

If the Haunting Fits, Wear it
Author: Rose Pressey

The Haunted Vintage Mystery series is a fun, quirky cozy mystery series. Main character, Cookie Chanel, owns a vintage clothing store, It's Vintage, Y'all. Her best friend, Hannah, is the proud owner of an occult shop. It's a blessing she has a friend with knowledge of the spirit world because Cookie is a ghost-magnet. Not only that, but her grandmother's spirit now inhabits her pet cat. The cat passes messages to Cookie by moving a planchette around a Ouija board. The stories are fun to read. The characters are charming. And, the mysteries are engaging. There are many paranormal themed cozy mysteries out there....but this one is refreshingly different. Each book is filled with lighthearted humor, interesting plots, and likable characters.

If The Haunting Fits, Wear It is the 5th book in the series. A reader will learn all the background and prior situations of the characters by starting with book 1, but it's also perfectly fine to jump in with this newest book. There isn't anything vital in the plot that requires knowledge of the prior books.

The basics:  Cookie has been hired to provide vintage hats for a Kentucky Derby party, so she rushes off to Kentucky. Just before leaving, she meets a female ghost who needs help discovering who killed her. The new ghost, Maureen, joins ghostly pal Charlotte and Cookie on the trip to Kentucky. But this isn't destined to be a simple business trip.....Cookie discovers the dead body of one of the derby jockeys, Ramon. His spirit joins her ghostly crew, asking Cookie to investigate his death. So while giving advice on vintage clothing for the Derby, Cookie is also investigating two murders -- Maureen's and Ramon's. Unfortunately, someone doesn't want her investigating. Threats and menacing thugs come Cookie's way as she tries to discover two killers and still get to the Derby on time!

As usual, I enjoyed this newest addition to the series. I enjoy the humor, vintage clothing tips and the quirkiness of the characters and situations. There were plenty of twists, turns and possible suspects in the jockey's murder. And the whole gang helped investigate Maureen's death. The Derby gave an interesting location change to the book.

All in all, a fun read and I look forward to the next book! At the very back of this book is an excerpt from upcoming 6th book, A Passion for Haunted Fashion, coming soon from Kensington!
