REVIEW: Gin & Daggers

 Gin & Daggers
Author: Donald Bain (Jessica Fletcher)

I loved the television show Murder, She Wrote. I watched it religiously each week from the premiere clear through to its last episode. I've always wanted to read the novels, but never got around to it. I think over the years I've only read 2 or 3 of the books. And there are more than 50!

I finally decided it was time to stop wishing and start reading!

Gin & Daggers is the first Murder, She Wrote novel. It was first published in 1989 while the show was still going strong on television. Fans of Jessica Fletcher complained about discrepancies between the character on the show and in the book (mainly the fact that Jessica talks about driving a car in the original book....and in the show she never learned to drive). In 2000, a corrected edition was published fixing the error about driving.

When I found this out, of course I had to find both editions of the book and read both to see if there were substantial changes. The changes were very few and very minor. But, it's the thought that counts. The author and publisher was aware that fans did not like the Jessica Errors....and fixed them. Nice!  One cosmetic difference I noticed was the older version of the book used the same font the television show used for the title and chapter headings. The paperback version from 2000 that I read did not. I liked seeing the font from the show! Made me smile. :)

There were some other differences I noted in the character -- like her referencing a past trip to London with her husband Frank. She remembered eating at some very expensive restaurants and seemed up on some cuisine and customs that would have been seemingly out of the price range for the television character before her writing career. And, in one spot Jessica mentions Frank was supportive of her writing, but in the show she  took  up her writing career after his death. But.....the book was very true to the character otherwise. I'm willing to give a little grace to the author. Glad they fixed some of the minor discrepancies that upset fans at the time, but it would have been impossible to fix them all without completely changing the book.

The basics: Jessica is attending an mystery author's conference in London, and is also a guest of an aging very popular mystery writer. When the writer is murdered and Jessica the number one suspect, she finds herself on the trail of a killer. As usual.

In real life, a woman like Jessica who always seems to be at the scene of murders would probably end up in prison! But....I totally suspend reality and just enjoy this character!! Whether in television re-runs or novels based on the show -- I still love Jessica Fletcher! Even 40 years after I first watched the show on tv!

I loved this first novel, and I'm going to read my way through as many of them as I can! And, yes, it was

totally worth the extra time to read the earlier version, then scan the newer version for changes. I love doing stuff like that! Probably most of the reason it's taking me years to read through all of Agatha Christie's books....I'm always going on some side tangent to read up on people, politics, places, foods, historical references, etc. I did the same with this Murder, She Wrote novel. They went to several restaurants and places in London....and I was happily looking up drink recipes, fancy foods that I was unfamiliar with, and lots of interesting places in London! The mystery was enjoyable.....but the side treks to research things mentioned in the book was also so much fun!

Reading this book has made me want to re-watch the show! Thank God for streaming services -- I can watch every season and every episode easily! Woot! :)

REVIEW: Take the Honey and Run

 Take the Honey and Run
Author: Jennie Marts

I love it when I come across a new cozy mystery series that is entertaining, funny and fun to read! I really enjoyed this book!

The basics: Bailey Briggs is a mystery author and busy with her life. But, when her grandmother is injured in a fall, she comes running to help. She doesn't realize this act of love will get her embroiled in a murder mystery with her grandma the prime suspect!

I knew from the start I would love this book. My grandfather kept bees, so the background theme of this cozy is totally nostalgic for me. Plus, the story is set in Colorado where I live. The story sucked me in from the start. I like the setting, the concept and the characters. Totally loved the grandmother -- warm and friendly with just the right amount of feisty!

The mystery moves at a nice pace with plenty of investigation, suspects and twists. I like the mix of mystery, humor and beekeeping. All in all, a very entertaining cozy mystery! I will definitely be reading the next book in this series!

REVIEW: How the Murder Crumbles

 How the Murder Crumbles
Author: Debra Sennefelder

Owning a cookie shop is a sweet and fun career with little stress, right?

Wrong.

Mallory Monroe loves baking and cookies are her specialty. Her shop is wonderful and located in just the right town. Things should be hunky-dory, but.....    Mallory has employee problems, and a pesky food blogger accuses her of recipe theft. Things only get worse when Mallory finds herself the top suspect in a murder investigation. Can she catch the killer, clear her name, and whip up some wonderful cookies in time to save her business and reputation?

I really enjoyed this book! While I did read one of  this author's books back in 2018, so much has happened between then and now, I really felt like I was reading a new-to-me author. I'm going to backtrack and re-read the series I started five years ago while waiting for the 2nd book in this series!

The mystery moved along at a nice pace, with some surprises and a nice mix of humor thrown in with the mystery plot. There were plenty of suspects and twists. I liked the characters and the side plot of a cookie shop (even if it did make me crave a cookie!).The story kept my attention from start to finish.

I'm definitely going to keep reading this series. This book was a nice escape for me! Lots of work stress going on right now....and I loved being able to just lose myself in an entertaining mystery for a few hours.

REVIEW: The Old Lion

 The Old Lion
Author: Jeff Shaara

I must admit that prior to reading this book, I had very little knowledge of Teddy Roosevelt beyond a bit about the Spanish-American War, the legend of the Teddy Bear, and his being elected president. I love learning more about history and influential historical figures...so jumped right on this book.

As I read, I had to smile a few times, as my thoughts turned to what it would be like to be at a dinner party with a man like Teddy Roosevelt. He would be the guy with a response to everything - "Oh, I did that once....'' or a one-up for anybody's story. The difference between Teddy and That Guy (we have all met That Guy at one party/dinner/social gathering or another -- you know the type I mean) is that Teddy actually did all those things -- climbed the mountains, fought the war, hunted the dangerous predator in the wilds, traveled to the jungle, faced death, etc. The man even finished a public speech after being shot by a would-be assassin. Who the hell does that?? Teddy Roosevelt, that's who. His one-ups wouldn't just be BS -- he did the things. [I also kept thinking about the movie Arsenic and Old Lace with the mentally ill brother who thought he was Teddy Roosevelt, blowing his trumpet in the house to charge up the stairs and burying "yellow fever victims" in the basement for his murderous sisters. I think Teddy would have seen the humor in the portrayal.]

I definitely enjoyed reading this book about a larger-than-life man who really lived his life. He lived the complete hell out of life, and I'm sure enjoyed every moment.

Great book! This isn't a dry regurgitation of historical facts. Shaara keeps it interesting. This book kept my attention from start to finish. Well done! Bully! I will definitely be reading more by this author!

REVIEW: The Ferryman

 The Ferryman
Author: Justin Cronin

When I first read the blurb for this story, I had instant nostalgia for similar stories I enjoyed in the past - Soylent Green, The Island/Parts, Logan's Run....  Loved them all!  So, of course, I had to read and review this book!

The basics: People who live on Prospera are born, live their lives, and then they retire. Their lives are ordered and controlled. Nobody ever leaves Prospera. Everyone pursues personal excellence, marries by contract, and follows the rules. Once a monitor in their arms reads a health rating below 10%, the people take a ferry ride to another place called The Nursery. Here, they are re-born, revitalized and start life again fresh. Proctor Bennett is a cog in the wheel of this process. He's a Ferryman, taking people to The Nursery. But things get confusing for him as he watches his own monitor click down and he also is faced with providing the ferry trip for his own father. Soon, he finds himself questioning the process and looking for the truth.

Scary concept!! I think this type of story hits home with me because, although they are obviously fictional, the tales have enough parallels to the truth to be disturbing. While we don't have clocks ticking down to our doom, as we age life does get increasingly difficult. We are all ticking down to retirement, old age, death..... It's all part of life, but terrifying. What will retirement be like once it's our turn? Will there be enough money? Will we be respected for our wisdom, or looked down on as a unproductive waste of resources? How close are we to a day and age where aged adults are seen as only a costly drag on society?

I believe I find these stories compelling because they are just that fine line past truth....just fiction enough to be believable and horrifying. What if we took that last little step across that line? Could a life that was completely controlled ever truly be happy?

Great story! The plot sucked me in right from the start and kept my total attention until the final page. This book is well written, suspenseful and disturbing!! This is the first book I've read by Justin Cronin. I plan to read more!! And, if they made this book into a movie, I would definitely watch it!

REVIEW: Steeped in Suspicion

 Steeped in Suspicion
Author: Eryn Scott

I love it when I "discover'' a new-to-me author and find the first book I read by them completely entertaining and enjoyable!

I am currently on a stay-cation, and decided that I wanted to just relax and read today.  The past year has really cut into my reading time -- a 1500 mile move, new job, new everything -- so I've been struggling to actually find time to sit and read. Today I took that time! And I am so glad that I did! As a book blogger, I download a lot of indy published books and read as many as I can. I end up on a lot of author newsletter lists, and today I just happened to have an email in my inbox from Eryn Scott. I decided right then and there that I wanted to try out something new! I clicked around on the lovely, colorful newsletter until I ended up on Eryn's website, and I picked the series that caught my interest the most.

The Pebble Cove Teahouse Mysteries.

I am a tea fanatic! I work from home, and my tea/coffee bar is right by my desk. My tea stash is large...because tea is my zen! So, of course, I had to read the series about a teahouse! Perfect choice - it was a total binge read for me.

The basics: Rosemary's estranged grandmother passes away and leaves her a Victorian teahouse. She expects to come into town, arrange for sale of the house and return to Portland. But childhood memories, a ghost, and a dead body washing up on the beach change her plans. Can Rosemary figure out what's going on in Pebble Cove before she becomes the killer's next target?

This story was completely entertaining and the mystery/side plots kept my attention from start to finish! I liked the setting -- Pebble Cove sounds like a place I would enjoy visiting. The characters were all charming...except the evil-doer of course! And, I didn't guess the killer before the reveal.

Pebble Cove Mysteries is a completed series of 8 books and an epilogue novella to round out the ending. I can't wait to read the next book in the series to find out what happens next!!

I'm definitely reading this series from start to finish. Book 1 sucked me right in!

On to book 2 -- I have it borrowed on Kindle Unlimited already! :)

UPDATE: Yep....I reviewed this book already, but I'm back to update this review. I got my hands on the audio book for the first 3 books in this series. So, I decided I enjoyed the book enough the first time to revisit it again!!

The audio for Steeped in Suspicion is a bit over 7 hours long and narrated by Jennifer Jill Araya. Jennifer does a great job reading the story. Her voice is pleasant and she reads at a good pace. I thoroughly enjoyed listening!! There's just something about having a story read out-loud to me -- especially where there are ghosts involved! :)

On to book 2 on audio!
